Review for Test I

The test will consist of two parts.

Part I (50%) Multiple Choice/True-False

The questions will focus on the material in Media Effects Research. Study the "key terms and concepts" at the end of the assigned chapters in Media Effects Research and note the ones we have discussed. Add other important concepts we have discussed: for example (from the web notes or class): catalytic theory of violence; mean world syndrome, Fraser Committee Report, Kaiser Family Foundation Report (2010), Nie (Stanford) Report, informed consent, beneficence, transformation, desensitization, results of various studies (including the power point notes) etc. Also include all the material posted on the web page, supplemental readings and anything discussed in class.

You should be familiar with the following researchers and their research:

Bandura

Berkowitz

Eron

Gerbner

Feshbach

Katz, Blumler and Gurevitch

Lazersfeld

McCombs and Shaw

Noelle-Neumann

Phillips

Schwartz

Part II (50%) Short Answer

Directions: For several concepts, you will be asked to (a) give a brief definition, and (b) give an example (hypothetical or actual) of the application of the concept and (c) point out the relevance for "critical issues" in mass communication.
