A slant of sun

through the glen

against a glassy brook

marks a solitary heron

gleaming like a burst of paradise.

Discovery disturbs her meditation.

When she breaks

plumes of spray

print a spotlight silhouette

of gold dust in the air

till pleats of her wing beats cease

and cloud threads sever the connection

everywhere but here.
