Using the Saint Mary’s Network in CPSC 103

 

 

Logon to your account on the Saint Mary’s by typing your Username, then type your Password and hit OK with your left mouse button.

 

The Windows XP operating system desktop window is on the computer screen in the labs when the computer is running.

 

Creating a folder in your Username on 'fs 1 smb server' (H:) network drive:

A new folder for CPSC 103 files can be created in your Username account. Open the Windows, Explore dialog box by right-clicking on the Start button and then left-click on Explore. Use the folders listing on the left to scroll down, and double-click Your Username on 'fs 1 smb server (H:) so your account files visible in the right side of the window. Next choose File, New, Folder, from the menu, which will place a blank folder icon on the right side of the window in your login account. The cursor will be blinking in the folder and you can type the new folder name, CPSC 103. Hit Enter after typing the folder name. You now have an empty folder ready to use in your network account. You only have to create a folder once, before you copy the first files into it.

 

Copying Files into a folder in your Username on 'fs 1 smb server (H:) network drive:

Use the folders listing on the left to scroll down and double-click on 'Windows 2008 file server (Mavis.saintmarys.edu)' (P:), then double-click the Courses folder, double-click the CPSC folder and double-click the CPSC 103 folder. You will see many files listed on the right. Choose Edit, Select All from the menus to highlight all the files. Point to the highlighted list and hold your right mouse button down while dragging the list of files to the CPSC 103 folder in your Username on 'fs 1 smb server' (H:), which is your own account, on the left half of the window (you will have to hover over your Username until your new CPSC 103 folder becomes visible). When you release the mouse, left-click on Copy here to copy all the files. Double-click your Username on'fs 1 smb server'\CPSC\CPSC 103 folder to see that the files copied. Edit, Select All and under File, Properties, remove the Read only checkmark. Close the Exploring dialog box.

 

The CPSC 103 folder on the SMC network will contain all the files you create and use in our course.

 

Starting Access:

Begin each Access session by clicking the Start button, All Programs, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Access 2010. This will launch Access.

 

Exiting Access and logging out:

Hit the X icon in the upper right of the database window to close the Access file. Close Access by choosing the Office button, Close from the menu, or hit the X button on the top right corner of the Access window. You will be back at the Windows XP desktop window. Click the Start button and choose Log Off. You may now leave your computer. Thank you for your co-operation!
