BelleNet

BelleNet refers to the secure 802.1x wireless network on campus. Access is available throughout campus, including the residence halls, academic buildings, Noble Family Dining Hall, Student Center, and Cushwa-Leighton Library.

BelleNet requires 802.1x authentication. Students, faculty, and staff can use their Saint Mary's username and password to connect their devices (computers, smartphones) to the BelleNet wireless network. Students, faculty, and staff will also need to agree every semester to the "Responsible Use of College Computers and the Internet @ Saint Mary's College" in order to connect to BelleNet.

To connect to BelleNet from an 802.1x-compatible device (which includes computers and smartphones):

    1. Select BelleNet as the wireless network you want to connect to on campus.
    2. Type in your Saint Mary's username (i.e. msmith01) and password (the same password you use to access your Saint Mary's e-mail) as prompted.
    3. If displayed, review the "Responsible Use of College Computers and the Internet @ Saint Mary's College" and additional policies specific to the network available in the residence halls, check the boxes to acknowledge understanding of specific portions of the policy, and agree to the entire policy by entering your Saint Mary's username and password as prompted.
    4. Restart your device.

    BelleNet Troubleshooting Tips

If you are having problems connecting to BelleNet from an 802.1x-compatible device (which includes computers and smartphones):

    1. "Forget" the network or delete it from your network settings, then try selecting it again to connect to it.
      • macOS: Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Network -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced -> select BelleNet and click on the - button.
      • Windows 10: Start -> Settings -> Network & Internet -> Wi-Fi -> Manage known networks -> select BelleNet and click the Forget button.
      • Windows 11: Start -> Settings -> Network & internet -> Wi-Fi -> Manage known networks -> In the line that lists BelleNet, click the Forget button.
      • iOS: Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced -> Tap the blue i next to BelleNet -> tap Forget This Network -> tap Forget to confirm.
      • You can use these same instructions to "forget" the Guest and DeviceNet wireless networks. All Saint Mary's students, faculty, and staff should be connecting their computers and smartphones to BelleNet, not the Guest or DeviceNet networks.

    2. Verify that your device allows 802.1x connections.
      • macOS computers should connect to 802.1x networks without additional settings changes.
      • Windows 10: Start -> Settings -> Network & Internet -> Status -> Change adapter options -> Wi-Fi -> Wireless Properties:
        • Connection tab: "Connect automatically when this network is in range" should be checked.
        • Security tab: Security type should be WPA2-Enterprise.
        • Security tab: Encryption type should be AES.
        • Security tab: Choose a network authentication method should be Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
        • Security tab: "Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged on" should be checked.
        • Security tab: Settings button: "Notifications before connecting" should be set to Tell user if the server's identity can't be verified.
        • Security tab: Settings button: "Select Authentication Method" should be set to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
        • Security tab: Settings button: Configure... button: "Automatically use my Windows login name and password (and domain if any)" should be unchecked.
        • Restart your device if any of the above settings needed to be changed before trying to reconnect.

      • Windows 11 computers should connect to 802.1x networks without additional settings changes.
        • Recommended: Start -> Settings -> Network & internet -> Wi-Fi -> BelleNet Properties -> "Connect automatically when in range" should be checked.

      • iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) should connect to 802.1x networks without additional settings changes.
      • Android devices may be able to connect 802.1x networks. Please note the following settings necessary to connect on campus:
        • EAP Method: PEAP
        • Phase 2 authentication: EAP-MSCHAP v2
        • CA Certificate: Do not validate
        • Anonymous Identity: Leave blank
        • Domain: saintmarys.edu
        • Identity: Your Saint Mary’s username
        • Password: Your Saint Mary’s password

Support for connecting to BelleNet is available for computers running macOS version 10.15 or later, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

Mobile devices running current versions of Apple's iOS (including iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices) can successfully connect to BelleNet.

Android devices are not supported by ResNet and Information Technology, but current Android smartphones should be able to connect to BelleNet successfully.

Amazon's Kindle Fire, Google Chromebooks, and other non-iOS tablet and mobile devices are not supported by ResNet or Information Technology. In most cases, tablets and other mobile devices can be successfully connected to the wireless network on campus, but at this time ResNet cannot provide any technical assistance if problems are encountered. If a device is not 802.1x-compatible, it can be registered on DeviceNet for a student to use in the residence halls.

    DeviceNet

Saint Mary's also offers DeviceNet in the residence halls. Students can connect devices such as gaming stations, digital personal assistants, DVD/Blu-ray players, televisions, etc. to the Internet using DeviceNet. DeviceNet is not available in the academic buildings.

All televisions, Apple TVs, and gaming stations (Xbox, PlayStation) in the residence halls must be connected to DeviceNet via a wired connection (Ethernet, RJ45). Wireless network connectivity for televisions, Apple TVs, and gaming stations is not available in the residence halls.

For instructions on connecting devices without 802.1x compatibility (televisions, Blu-ray/DVD players, game consoles, personal digital assistants), please visit the related ResNet FAQ page at http://www.saintmarys.edu/resnet/resnetfaq/manualregister.html.

Please do not attempt to connect your laptop or smartphone to the DeviceNet wireless network - doing so can cause network connectivity problems for your device while on campus. If you accidentally attempt to connect your laptop or smartphone to the DeviceNet network, please "forget" the network or delete it from your network settings, then connect to the BelleNet network.
