Saint Mary's students are responsible for checking their computer to make sure it is compatible with ResNet and any software they purchase through the Microsoft Campus Agreement. Students are expected to confirm the compatibity of their personal computers prior to arriving on campus and before purchasing the Microsoft software.

    Students wishing to upgrade their version of Windows should also refer to their computer's documentation or manufacturer's website to confirm compatibility and the availability of drivers for their computer model.

    The instructions below assume that you are checking your computer's specifications for compatibility with Microsoft software, since those typically exceed the minimum specifications for connecting to ResNet.


    To check your Mac OS X system specifications for Office 2011 for Mac compatibility:

    1. Go to the Apple menu (in the upper left corner) and select About this Mac.
    2. The software version must meet or exceed Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 for Office 2011 compatibility. If you are running an earlier version of Mac OS 10.5 you will need to run Software Update first to be compatible.
    3. The Processor must be Intel for Office 2011 compatibility.
    4. The Memory must be 1GB or more (RAM).
    5. Click the More Info... button.
    6. In the left column, select Disc Burning. Next to Reads DVD it should say Yes.
      • If you have a MacBook Air or other Apple computer that does not have an optical (CD/DVD) drive, you may visit the ResNet Office for assistance. The ResNet Office has external Apple USB SuperDrives available for students to use while installing Microsoft Office, but the installation must take place in the ResNet Office and students are required to remain with their computers until the installation is complete.
    7. To check the hard drive capacity and free space available, click once on the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop. Go to the File menu and select Get Info. The Available space should exceed 2.5GB for Office 2011 compatibility.

    To check your Windows 8 system specifications for Office 2010 for Windows, Office 2013 for Windows, and Windows 8 Pro Edition compatibility:

    1. To access the Desktop from the Start screen in Windows 8, click on the Desktop tile or press the Windows logo and D keys on the keyboard.
    2. From the Desktop in Windows 8, move your cursor to the upper right corner of your screen to pull up the Charms bar. Select Settings. Select PC Info.
    3. In the window that appears, will find the version of Windows 8 you are running. Both Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro are supported at Saint Mary's College.
    4. You will also see the processor type, speed, and installed Memory (RAM) on your computer.
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor for Office 2010 for Windows, and need at least 1GB of memory (RAM).
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor for Office 2013 for Windows, and need at least 2GB of memory (RAM).
    5. You need at least a 1GHz 64-bit processor for Windows 8 Pro Edition, and need at least 2GB of memory (RAM).
    6. To see how much space is available on your hard drive, go to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and click on the yellow folder icon for File Explorer. In the left column, click on Computer to expand its list (if it has not already been expanded). The Local Disk (C:) drive is likely your primary drive. Right-click on Local Disk (C:) and select Properties.
      • You need at least 3.5GB free space for Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows.
      • You need at least 3GB free space for Microsoft Office 2013 for Windows.
      • You need at least a 40GB hard drive with 20GB free space for Windows 8 Pro Edition.
    7. To see if you have the ability to read DVDs, look at the left column of the File Explorer window in the Expanded list below Computer. The icon for the optical (CD/DVD) drive will list what kind of drive it is. If it says DVD, it will be able to read CDs and DVDs.

    To check your Windows 7 system specifications for Office 2010 for Windows, Office 2013 for Windows, and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition compatibility:

    1. Go to the Start menu, right-click on Computer, and select Properties.
    2. In the window that appears, will find the version of Windows 7 you are running. Only Windows 7 Professional Edition and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition are supported at Saint Mary's College.
    3. You will also see the processor type, speed, and installed Memory (RAM) on your computer.
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor for Office 2010 for Windows, and need at least 1GB of memory (RAM).
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor for Office 2013 for Windows, and need at least 2GB of memory (RAM).
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor for Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, and need at least 1GB of memory (RAM), with 2GB or more preferred (2GB required for 64-bit).
    4. To see how much space is available on your hard drive, go to the Start menu and select Computer. The Local Disk (C:) drive is likely your primary drive, and it will list how much space is available and the total capacity of the hard drive.
      • You need at least 3.5GB of free space available for Office 2010.
      • You need at least 3.0GB of free space available for Office 2013.
      • You need at least 20GB of free space available to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.
    5. To see if you have the ability to read DVDs, go to the Start menu and select Computer. The icon for the optical (CD/DVD) drive will list what kind of drive it is. If it says DVD, it will be able to read CDs and DVDs.

    To check your Windows Vista system specifications for Office 2010 for Windows and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition compatibility:

    1. Right-click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties.
    2. In the window that appears, will find the version of Windows Vista you are running. Only Windows Vista Business Edition and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition are supported at Saint Mary's College.
    3. You may choose to upgrade to either Windows Vista Ultimate Edition OR Windows 7 Ultimate Edition if your version of Windows Vista is not supported - please refer to your computer's documentation or manufacturer's website to confirm compatibility with Windows Vista Ultimate Edition or Windows 7 Ultimate Edition prior to purchase and installation.

    4. You will also see the processor type, speed, and amount of RAM on your computer.
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor and at least 1GB of memory (RAM) for Office 2010.
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor and at least 1GB of memory (RAM) for Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.
      • You need at least a 1GHz processor and at least 1GB of memory (RAM) for Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (2GB or more preferred, 2GB required for 64-bit).
    5. To see how much space is available on your hard drive, double-click on the My Computer icon. The C: drive is likely your primary drive, and it will list how much space is available and the total capacity of the hard drive.
      • You need at least 3.5GB of free space available for Office 2010.
      • You need at least 15GB of free space available to upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.
      • You need at least 20GB of free space available to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.
    6. To see if you have the ability to read DVDs, double-click on the My Computer icon. The icon for the optical (CD/DVD) drive will list what kind of drive it is. If it says DVD, it wil be able to read CDs and DVDs.
