Yes, it is possible to configure Thunderbird to send and receive messages via your
Saint Mary's e-mail account.
Please note that any e-mail you send to Saint Mary's faculty, staff, or students should be
sent from your Saint Mary's e-mail account. Your Saint Mary's e-mail account is the official
method of communication for the College, regardless of which product you use for messages
(Zimbra, GMail, Thunderbird, Mail). Instructions for sending messages from your Saint Mary's
email account via
Apple's Mail are a part of these instructions, so please follow the instructions in their entirety.
These instructions were written for Thunderbird version 2.x. The instructions
may vary slightly if you have another version of Thunderbird on your computer.
- On your computer, open Thunderbird.
(If you do not already have Thunderbird installed, you can download it for free at
http://www.mozilla.com.)
- If this is the first time you are using Thunderbird, you can import your settings
from another program or complete a New Account Setup.
- New Account Setup:
(The New Account Setup appears automatically the first time you launch Thunderbird.
You can also manually launch the New Account Setup by going to the Tools menu,
selecting Account Settings..., and clicking the Add Account... button in the lower left
corner of the window.)
- Click on the button next to Email Account.
- Click Continue.
- In the Identity window, complete the following:
- Your Name: (Example: Mary Smith)
- Email address: (Example: msmith01@saintmarys.edu)
- Click Continue.
- In the Server Information window, complete the following:
- Select the button next to IMAP.
- Incoming Server: zimbra.saintmarys.edu
- Outgoing Server: zimbra.saintmarys.edu
- Click Continue.
- In the User Names window, complete the following:
- Incoming User Name: (Your Saint Mary's Username. Example: msmith01)
- Outgoing User Name: (Your Saint Mary's Username. Example: msmith01)
- Click Continue.
- In the Account Name window, complete the following:
- Account Name: (Your Saint Mary's E-mail Address. Example: msmith01@saintmarys.edu)
- Click Continue.
- Review the information and verify it is correct, and click Done.
- Edit the New Account Settings:
(The default New Account Setup has settings that do not match what Saint Mary's
requires, so they must be changed.)
- Go to the Tools menu, select Account Settings..., and click the
Add Account... button in the lower left corner of the window.
- Under the options for your Saint Mary's e-mail account (listed in the
left column), click Server Settings.
- In the Port: field, enter 143. (The default is 143.)
- Under Security Settings, DO NOT click on the button next to SSL.
- In the left column, click on Outgoing Server (SMTP).
- In the right column, select the item that says
yourusername - zimbra.saintmarys.edu and click the Edit... button.
- Under Security and Authentication, make sure that "Use name and password" is checked.
- Click on the button next to TLS.
- In the Port: field near the top of the window, enter 25.
- Click OK.
- You should now be able to send and receive your Saint Mary's e-mail from the Thunderbird
software. Please note that messages that you receive and create on your computer are stored
on the Zimbra mail server, which will affect your 2GB quota.
