Note:  Congratulations on taking this course. It should be informative, interesting and good for your soul. There are also numerous practical advantages to taking this course that I will go into repeatedly during the course of the semester. There is much planned and attendance will be critical. There is a great deal of technical ground to cover, and any missed class will negatively effect your production. There is some sort of demonstration or material explanations planned for just about every class, so don't miss any.

Etching is a trip, but most of the work you do will need to be done in the studio. Some can be done at other locations, but acid baths and presses don't go anywhere. Remember, the studio is open for many hours, and due to the number of people in this class it will be necessary for you to come and work on your own a number of times. This doesn't mean that you should think you can work all that independently. I want to be here when you are doing critical things, and in printmaking almost everything you do is critical. Remember, you are never to work alone in the studio, and it will be to your advantage to not work in the studio when there is a silk-screen class going on. Any other time is fine, but remember to have a classmate with you.

It is imperative that you keep the studio as clean as possible at all times! Clean up after yourself before you leave the room!

Safety is a very high priority, and we must look out for one another. Only your own personal materials are to leave the room. Everything else is commonly shared and must stay in the studio. This includes books. You will be sharing flat files to keep some of your materials in (plates & paper), so please be considerate of your sharees, and don't take up space that you don't really need.

Sorry, but I am required to include the following information: Everyone is expected to arrive on time for class. It is imperative that we get started on time since there is a great deal of material to cover in a relatively limited amount of time. Unexcused, missed critiques count as two absences. Any missed class before or after a break counts as two absences. After three absences, each additional absence will decrease your grade by 1/2 letter. You are being allotted enough time to adequately complete each assignment. Each print is to be complegte by the assigned critique date and you will need at least two identical copies of each print to present. Any late work will negatively effect your grade. You can change/alter/improve your work after a critique, in fact you should. You will be given a written evaluation of your work and a tentative grade after each critique. Final prints will be discussed with you individually at the end of the semester. You can change your work up until that time. These end of the semester meetings are mandatory. Final grades will be determined after the conclusion of these meetings. Only your residence in a hospital can exempt you from these meetings. They are not painful and are merely individual discussions between you and me. You are expected to work a minimum of nine hours per week for this course. To complete all that is expected you will need to put in at least this much time, but if you productivelyuse class there should be little problem with completing evertything required. You are expected to attend campius ciultural events and visiting artists' lectures whern they occur, and I would like to see you keep a sketchbook with notes about these events alonbg with drawing studies for your prints and documentation about the progress and processes used in your prints. Academic Honesty Code: When a student submits any work for academic credit, she makes an implicit claim that the wor4k is wholly her own, done without the assistance of any person or source not explicited noted, and that the work has not been previously submitted for academic credit in any area. (Appropriations are allowed if the work becomes entirely yours and is unique). Course Cancellation Policy: If it is necessary to cancel a class for some unforseen reason I will try to contact you by e-mail. The secretary of the Department will also be notified and she will put a notice on the doors of ghe stueio. If there is not a note from the offce the class is not cancelled. In the event that a class is cancelled (oor that for some reason I cannot be here) you should still work on your own in the studio. College Policy for Students with Disabilities: Any student who is eligible for accommodations to complete the requirements and expectation of this course because of a disabiligy should make her needs know to me and should also contact Iris Giamo, in the Disability Resource Office for an appointment to review documentation and arrange for appropriate and legal accommodations. There is a great deal planned for the semester. It should be a good one and I sincerely hope that you enjoy it and learn a great deal from it.
