What is McAfee Security 1.2 for Mac?
McAfee Security 1.2 is also known as McAfee VirusScan 9.1 for Mac.
McAfee Security is malware-protection software that is available for use on
College-owned and personally-owned
Apple computers of faculty, staff and students running Mac OS X version 10.6 or later
(including Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion).
McAfee Security (and the earlier version VirusScan for Mac) is standard software on
every public and office
Mac. If McAfee Security is not already on your Mac running Mac OS X version 10.6
or later,
you can install the software using the instructions below.
Even if you have McAfee Security installed on your computer, you must still update your
McAfee Security definition files regularly to keep your malware protection software up-to-date.
The instructions for installing McAfee Security will include information on how
McAfee Security will automatically download and install the latest definitions available for your computer.
Why is it called "McAfee Security" instead of "McAfee VirusScan"? Because there are more security
threats to computers than just viruses. McAfee Security is a new product that focuses on
protecting Macs from all malicious software (malware), and not just the few virus threats that
affect them.
Installing McAfee Security 1.2
To install McAfee Security on your computer, you must have Mac OS X version 10.6 or later
(including 10.7 or 10.8) installed on your computer.
(This includes Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion.)
To make sure that your computer is running Mac OS X version 10.6 or later, go to the Apple Menu
in the upper left corner of your computer and select "About this Mac." Under the words
"Mac OS X" it will list the version number. If you are running a version of Mac OS X
that is earlier than version 10.6, you cannot install McAfee Security 1.2.
This install will take approximately 10-30 minutes, depending on
the speed of the computer and your network connection.
- Before you install McAfee Security, make sure your operating system is
up-to-date and any previous versions of VirusScan for Mac are uninstalled.
If you have a previous version of VirusScan for Mac
installed on your computer, the McAfee Security installer should automatically
remove it.
- If you have virus protection software other than VirusScan for Mac
installed on your Macintosh, please refer to the documentation that
came with that software to uninstall it. Having multiple copies of virus-protection software
installed on a computer can cause severe performance problems. If you do not have the
original software manuals for your existing non-VirusScan for Mac
virus protection software, you may want to refer to the software manufacturer's web site
for instructions.
- You must have administrative privileges on your computer to install this software.
- As with any software install, please make sure that you have your personal
data backed up before you begin the installation process.
