    What about tablets?

Devices such as Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Fire should be viewed as complements to a student’s computer, rather than as a computer replacement. ResNet provides basic support for iOS devices (including Apple’s iPad and iPhone), including assistance with issues involving connecting to the ResNet and BelleAire wireless networks and setting up the device to access Saint Mary’s e-mail. Recommended Software:

Saint Mary's College offers Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students for free to our students. Office 365 ProPlus offers full versions of current Microsoft Office software that can be downloaded and installed on students' personally-owned Mac OS X and Windows computers. Versions of Office for mobile devices are also included with Office 365 ProPlus. After a license has been assigned, a Saint Mary’s student can install Office 365 ProPlus software on up to five personally-owned computers and five personally-owned mobile devices. There are no monthly subscription fees associated with the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students license.

Students must show their Saint Mary's ID card to verify their eligibility for this program and sign an agreement to obtain the license. The software can then be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

The Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for Students license will expire automatically 30 days after a student's active affiliation with Saint Mary’s College ends (this includes graduation). At expiration, the software will enter a reduced-functionality mode (files can be viewed but it will not be possible to edit or create new files) and the OneDrive associated with a student's Saint Mary’s account will no longer be accessible.

The ResNet Office has a minimal supply of Microsoft Office software on discs in inventory. The software will be available for sale until our supplies have been exhausted. Students may purchase a single copy of:

      • Microsoft Office 2013 for Windows
      • Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac

      for $10 each.

The ResNet Office also has a supply of Windows software on discs available. Students may purchase a single copy of:

      • Windows 8 Pro Upgrade
      • Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Upgrade

      for $10 each.

Students must show their Saint Mary's ID card to verify their eligibility for this program and sign a license agreement to purchase the software. Purchases will be charged to students' accounts.

For more information, please refer to the Microsoft Software section of the ResNet FAQ, available here.

    Important Information Regarding Microsoft Windows:

Both Macintosh and Windows computers can be connected to our network if they meet the requirements listed in our Student's Guide to Bringing a Computer to Saint Mary's College, and both are equally supported on campus. Approximately 67% of students on ResNet had a Mac and 33% had a computer running Windows during the 2015/2016 academic year.

If you chose to buy a new computer running Windows, ResNet strongly recommends purchasing a computer that already has a supported version of the Windows operating system installed.

Most students who brought computers to campus with Windows 10 chose not to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, and that is perfectly fine - both versions of Windows 10 are supported by ResNet. Most students who brought computers to campus with Windows 8 chose not to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, and that is perfectly fine - both versions of Windows 8 are supported by ResNet. We offer the Windows 8 Pro Edition Upgrade to those who have Windows 8 on their computer and wish to upgrade it. We recommend that students with an unsupported version of Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition instead of Windows 8 Pro Edition.

New computers that did not have a supported Windows operating system pre-installed that were brought to the ResNet Office during the 2015/2016 academic year averaged more than three hours to complete the operating system upgrade process, and students are required to be present in the ResNet Office while their computers are being upgraded. The length of time varies by computer manufacturer, model, and availability of hardware drivers.

Please note that not all computers can have their operating system software upgraded. ResNet recommends that you confirm that you computer meets the required specifications and that the appropriate drivers are available from your computer's manufacturer before attempting to upgrade an operating system. (This information should be available on your computer manufacturer's website.) Students are expected to confirm the compatibility of their own computers before purchasing any Windows upgrade software.

      Other useful items:

      • USB flash drive for transferring files between computers
        • ResNet recommends and the ResNet Computer Consultants (RCCs) use Kingston DataTraveler DTI flash drives. They are available for purchase at the Bookstore, Best Buy, and Amazon.com.
      • External hard drive for backing up data
        • Saint Mary's Information Technology staff use various Western Digital external hard drives. The Western Digital Passport drives are available for purchase at the Bookstore Best Buy, and Amazon.com.

Please note: Saint Mary's College does not support Windows XP (any version), Windows Vista (any version), Windows 7 Starter Edition, or Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. Please do not bring these operating systems to campus. These operating systems will prevent students from accessing and installing major components of the Saint Mary's College network, including personal network drives, course-related software, and the virus-protection software provided to all students.

Students bringing computers with unsupported operating systems to campus will be required to upgrade their operating systems before connecting to ResNet and receiving ResNet support.
