Mahone Named Tennis Coach at Saint Mary’s
NOTRE DAME, IN – The Saint Mary’s athletic department has hired Eric Mahone as the head coach of the Belles tennis squad.
“We are very excited to hire Eric as our tennis coach. His experience as a collegiate athlete gives him great insight into the time demands that are put on our student-athletes,” Saint Mary’s Athletics Director Lynn Kachmarik said. “His knowledge, energy and passion for tennis are great characteristics that will help Eric as he looks to build our program into a top tier NCAA Division III team.”
In 2000 Mahone graduated from IUPUI with a degree in Political Science. He was a varsity letterwinner on three occasions for the Jaguars tennis squad and served as co-captain during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
From 2003-2006 he served as the assistant coach of the men’s and women’s tennis programs at the University of Chicago. During the 2005 season Mahone was named the University Athletic Association Assistant Coach of the Year after the Maroons men’s squad made the NCAA Tournament field for the first time in school history. In 2006 he help guide the Maroons women’s team to their first NCAA tournament.
Mahone currently serves in a variety of tennis capacities in the South Bend area. Since the 2002 season, he has coached the St. Joseph High School boy’s tennis squad and helped guide them to a runner-up finish at the State Championships in 2002.
In addition to that role, Mahone has also been a tennis professional at the South Bend Racquet Club also while serving as the tennis director and head professional at Morris Park Country Club.
He inherits a squad that was coached the past eight seasons by Dee Stevenson. The Belles have won three MIAA tournament championships and in 2002 qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
