Saint Mary’s Knocks Off Alma, 3-0

For the first time since the 1999 season, Saint Mary’s posted a win over Alma and they did so in convincing fashion with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-15) win on Sunday afternoon in MIAA volleyball action.
In snapping the 13-match losing streak to Alma, the win lifts the Belles record to 14-6 overall and 7-4 in league play while Alma falls to 8-10 and 5-5 respectively.
Saint Mary’s broke open a tight first game when, with the Belles leading 13-12, they scored seven straight points in posting the nine-point game one victory. The Scots jumped out to a 9-4 edge to begin the second game but Saint Mary’s chipped away and eventually took the lead at 19-18 and never trailed again in taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Belles cruised to a game three victory. Saint Mary’s held a 20-7 lead at one point and never looked back in taking the match in the sweep.
Lorna Slupczynski tallied a double-double with a match high 17 kills to go with her 16 dig effort. Kristen Playko also posted a double with a 16-kill, 18-dig performance in the win. Anne Cusack, who leads the MIAA in digs, tallied 24 digs in the winning effort.
Kaylee Sova and Rebecca Bruning each posted a team high nine kills for the Scots.
