Saint Mary’s Stays Hot; Beats Kalamazoo, 3-0

Saint Mary’s posted their six win in their last seven matches in knocking off Kalamazoo 3-0 (30-16, 38-36, 30-18) Wednesday evening in MIAA volleyball action at the Angela Athletic Center.

The win lifts the Belles record to 10-2 overall while upping their league record to 3-1. Saint Mary’s is off to their best 12-match start in school history. Kalamazoo falls to 5-7 and 1-2 respectively.

Saint Mary’s held a 7-6 lead in the opening game and broke it open by scoring 12 of the next 15 points in taking a 1-0 edge in the match.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair. The Hornets went up 17-10 only to see the Belles storm back to take a 21-17 lead. Kalamazoo was finally able to tie the game at 28-28 before the teams traded numerous points down the stretch of the game before the Belles finally claimed victory. The Hornets had five game points in the second frame but couldn’t covert.

After losing the first point of game three, the Belles never trailed the rest of the way in the final game in claiming the sweep.

Leading the way for the Belles was Kristen Playko who posted her 11 th double-double of the year with a 15-kill, 22-dig performance. Lorna Slupczysnki also chipped in a double-double, her seventh of the season, with 13 kills and 10 digs. Cathy Kurczak pitched in 11 kills while Anne Cusack tallied 21 digs to aid in the Belles victory.

Mariah Fyre posted a team high 11 kills for the Hornets while Laura Winkler (18) and Megan Kroc (13) posted double figure dig efforts for the visitors.
