Saint Mary’s Defeats Olivet in Home Opener

Saint Mary’s began the home portion of their schedule with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-29, 30-25) win over Olivet Thursday evening in MIAA volleyball action.
The win lifts the Belles record to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play with Olivet falls to 0-5 and 0-1 respectively.
In the opening game Saint Mary’s jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held an advantage as large as 11 in cruising to the game one victory. During the second game, the Belles never trailed but had to hold on down the stretch before securing a 2-0 edge in the match.
In the final game, the Comets jumped out to a 18-7 lead to start the game before the Belles rallied to win 23 of the final 30 points to secure the game and clinch the match.
Leading the way for the Belles was Kristen Playko who posted her sixth straight double-double with an 18-kill, 12-dig effort in victory. Anne Cusack tallied 26 digs to lead the Saint Mary’s back row defensive efforts.
Kim Travis had a match high nine kills for Olivet.
