GRAND RAPIDS , MI – Saint Mary’s and Calvin each took an extra inning game in MIAA softball action Tuesday afternoon at Gainey Field. Each game went eight innings with Saint Mary’s posting a 2-1 win in the first game before Calvin took the second contest by a 4-3 count.
The Belles record now stands at 14-4 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play while Calvin goes to 5-9 and 1-1 respectively.
In the opening game, a Maureen Healy single plated Ashley Peterson in the top of the eighth to lift Saint Mary’s to the win. In the bottom of the seventh, Calvin’s Loren Scarbourgh tied the score with a two-out RBI double.
Peterson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the opening game to pace the Belles offensive efforts. Sarah Miesle also posted two hits in the winning cause. Calli Davison pitched all eight innings and struck out four to improve to 9-1 on the mound.
During the second game the Belles had to play catch-up by tying the score in the seventh inning on a Healy sacrifice fly that scored Peterson. However, Calvin responded in the eighth when Leah VanEnk’s single with one-out scored Erin Conrad.
