Saint Mary's Bows Out of MIAA Tournament

ALMA , MI – The fourth-seed Saint Mary’s Belles lost both of their games on Thursday afternoon at the MIAA Tournament. The first game of the day saw Alma recorded a 3-0 victory which sent the Belles to the consolation bracket were second-seeded Hope ended Saint Mary’s season with a 6-1 victory.
The Belles end their season with a 25-9 record.
In the first game the Belles were shut down offensively by Scots pitcher Kay McDonald as the senior struck out nine and allowed just five base runners. Alma put a run on the board in the first inning and added a pair in the third and it was more than enough for the top-seeded and host Scots.
For the Belles Calli Davison, Ashley Peterson and Sarah Miesle each banged out a hit a piece but it wasn’t enough.
During the elimination game between the Flying Dutch and the Belles, Hope used timely hitting and took advantage of Saint Mary’s miscues in posting the win.
Hope got on the board in the first inning with a Kelli Duimstra RBI single. The Flying Dutch added on five runs, three of them unearned, in the fourth inning.
Saint Mary’s plated a run in the bottom of the fourth when Laura Heline scored on a Cathy Kurczak fielder’s choice. The Belles put runners on base in two of their final three at-bats but couldn’t push across any runs.
Peterson posted a three-hit effort for the Belles in the loss.
The four-team tournament continues with Alma, Tri-State and Hope on Friday.
