The Saint Mary’s
softball team opened their home schedule by splitting with Manchester
on Wednesday afternoon. Manchester won the first game 2-1 while
the Belles claimed a 9-1 five-inning victory in the second contest
Saint Mary’s record now stands at 10-4 while the Spartans
keep an even .500 mark at 7-7.
In the opening game a Holly McEathron solo homerun opened the
scoring in the fourth inning in giving Manchester a 1-0 edge.
The Belles responded in the fifth when Martha Smid scored on
an error by third baseman Jenn Allen. The Spartans scored the
winning run when Lisa Heaton drove home Melissa Bower with a
single in the sixth inning.
The second game was dominated by Saint Mary’s pitcher
Kristin Amram. The freshman struck out a school record 13 batters
in the contest cut short because of the mercy rule. She faced
19 batters and gave up three hits while walking one in improving
her record to 5-1.
The Belles opened the scoring with three runs in the first.
Manchester made the score 3-1 with a run in the top of the third
but Saint Mary’s exploded for six runs in the fifth inning
to end the game before the scheduled seven inning contest.
