The Saint Mary’s College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted their annual Valentine's Day party on Sunday, February 11 for children from Memorial Hospital's oncology unit and their families. Six of the eight varsity sports teams provided fun, food, and entertainment for their guests.
Over thirty children spent the afternoon in Angela Athletic Facility with the Belles to enjoy the Valentine's Day atmosphere. Each team provided a craft for the children, including decorating cookies, creating love bugs, and crafting bouquets of lollipop roses among other activities.
Senior volleyball player Kristen Playko said, “The kids are amazing. It's so hard to believe that such little people have to go through so much. I love being able to help them take their minds off of their situation, even if it's just for a couple of hours. ”
In addition to the crafts, children had the opportunity to play basketball, volleyball, and participate in other activities while also having the chance to win special prizes. “The three hours we spent at the Valentine's Day party are the most important three hours we will have spent this week. It's an amazing opportunity to give back to children who have been through such life-changing experiences. We can change their situations and lives in three hours - that's pretty awesome,” commented senior soccer and softball player Laura Heline.
