Duffy’s Career High Leads Saint Mary’s Past Alma

ALMA, MI – Patty Duffy came off the bench to score a career high 15 points in 21 minutes to help Saint Mary’s sweep the season series from Alma with a 66-58 Wednesday evening.
The win lifts the Belles record to 7-10 overall and 6-4 in MIAA play while Alma falls to 7-9 and 3-6 respectively. With the victory Saint Mary’s stays tied with Olivet for third place in the league standings.
Saint Mary’s raced out to a 16-8 lead after an Anna Kammrath lay-up with 12:48 remaining in the opening half. Alma chipped away with a 23-9 scoring spurt over the next 9:47 in holding a 31-25 advantage. However the Belles scored 12 of the half’s remaining 18 points in taking a 37-36 edge at intermission. During the final scoring run of the first half Duffy and Alison Kessler each contributed a three-point and combined to score 10 points.
The opening moments of the final half were back and forth until a Duffy three-pointer with 13:46 left in the game gave Saint Mary’s a 48-47 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Another Duffy three-pointer with 5:07 remaining pushed the Belles advantage to 59-51 and Alma never got within five points the rest of the game.
Duffy was 6-of-13 from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort from beyond the arc, during the freshman’s career best evening. Erin Newsom chipped in 14 points while Bridget Lipke added 13 points and four assists. Kessler scored 11 points to round out the double figure scorers for the Belles. Kammrath had a team high 10 rebounds for Saint Mary’s.
Ashley Matuzak had a team best 14 points for Alma while Emily Niemi contributed a double-double with a 14-rebound, 11-point effort.
