Saint Mary's Cruises Past Kalamazoo

NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s posted a 72-40 win over Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon in MIAA basketball action. The 32-point margin of victory was the biggest ever in school history for the Belles during a league game.
The win ups the Belles record to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in MIAA play while Kalamazoo falls to 3-12 and 2-5 respectively.
In the opening half Kalamazoo connected on just 13.8 percent (4-of-29) of their field goal attempts as Saint Mary’s held a 36-14 cushion at intermission. In addition, the Belles outscored the Hornets 22-4 in the paint during the first period.
The second half was much the same as Saint Mary’s held a lead as large as 38 points and never let the Hornets get closer than 20 points in cruising to the win. For the game, the Belles posted a 40-18 advantage for points in the paint.
As a team the Belles nailed 46.8 percent (29-of-62) of their shots from the field which mark the second best percentage of the season. Their 29 made field goals tied their season high for shots made.
Alison Kessler led all scorers with 17 while Bridget Lipke chipped in 12 for Saint Mary’s. Both Erin Newsom and Anna Kammrath notched 10-point, nine rebound efforts in the victory.
Kelsea Howell had a team high 10 points for the Hornets.
