Saint Mary's Stops Tri-State, 83-79

NOTRE DAME, IN – Erin Newsom posted career highs with 20 points and 16 rebounds in leading Saint Mary’s to a 83-79 victory over Tri-State Tuesday evening in MIAA basketball action.
The win lifts the Belles record to 4-7 overall and 3-1 in MIAA while Tri-State falls to 2-9 and 0-3 respectively.
In the opening half neither team held control of the action. Tri-State used a small spurt midway through the half in taking a 22-19 lead with 6:17 left in the half. However the Belles responded with 19-11 scoring run to end the half in taking a 38-33 lead at intermission. The Thunder never held a lead the rest of the way.
Saint Mary’s increased their advantage and held their largest lead of the night at 62-49 with 8:22 left in the game. The Thunder was able to cut their deficit to single digits with less than a minute remaining but couldn’t overcome the Belles.
Alison Kessler scored a game high 22 points on the strength of a 10-of-13 performance from the charity stripe. Bridget Lipke posted a 19-point effort while Anna Kammrath notched a double figure scoring effort with 10
Newsom went 8-for-20 from the field in aiding in her 20-point effort. The sophomore also was aggressive on the offensive end by grabbing 10 offensive rebound.
As a team Saint Mary’s corralled a season best 52 total rebounds in posting an 11 rebound edge over the Thunder.
Sarah Howe posted a team best 21 points for Tri-State
