#5 Wheaton Drops Saint Mary's in Season Opener

WHEATON , IL – Wheaton, the fifth ranked team in the nation, put four players in double figures as they knocked off Saint Mary’s 68-48 Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at the Lee Pfund Classic hosted by Wheaton.
Wheaton moves on to play Wilmington (OH) in the championship game of the classic while the Belles will face Wisconsin-Whitewater in the consolation game. Both games will be played on Saturday afternoon.
The Thunder nailed 17 of their 35 shots in the first half (48.6 percent) while holding the Belles to 22.7 shooting (5-of-22) in the opening 20 minutes in opening up a 37-17 edge at halftime. In the second frame Wheaton held a lead of double figures through out.
Preseason All-American Jill Trenz scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Wheaton attack. Brittany Cooper chipped in 13 points while Carissa Bacon and Kathleen Fidelia scored 11 and 10 points respectively for the Thunder.
Alison Kessler had a game high 17 points to lead the Saint Mary’s effort. Erin Newsom had 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Belles.
